Wild Orchid is dedicated to early childhood development

Wild Orchid is dedicated to early childhood development since these formative years are crucial to success as an adolescent and later as a functioning and sustainable adult. Our programs offer classroom support via educational presentations. Our presentations consist of various developmental topics as health & hygiene to social & cultural awareness

We incorporate art, story, dance and music. Because of donors worldwide, we are able to provide books to have classroom libraries, laptops, toothbrushes with toothpaste. We offer an interactive presentation and foster writing and literacy. Students in the classroom send a composed letter and receive one from a US students.

The Wild Orchid Philippines Team received 10 “balikbayan boxes” filled with over a thousand books donated by students

The Wild Orchid Philippines Team received 10 “balikbayan boxes” filled with over a thousand books donated by students in the US so that Filipino Elementary Students can enjoy books and foster a love of reading. The Nyora Taling Literacy Program is an agenda named in honor of Wild Orchid’s founder’s Coco Baran’s late grandmother. Nyora Taling was a benefactor to many people, whom she sent to school, and today have careers. One of those individuals, in fact is a teacher at this very school.

In Filipino Public Schools, at this time, English is not introduced until upper level grades so this literacy program is a supplement to provide English skills so that they can have competitive global skills and be ready to pass world academic standards and be ready to continue on to higher education study.

It is of utmost importance that children worldwide have access to a competitive education so that they can have the advantage to pursue any career they strive to have. Breaking the cycle of poverty is contingent on students having the necessary resources and developing the skills needed to work in positions of life  sustaining salaries.

Because of the concern and proactivity of US classrooms and school communities; Turning Point Elementary School of Culver City California: https://www.turningpointschool.org/  as our most prominent source of book donations, numerous of Filipino students have the gift of enjoyment, wonder and literary development. Books were gifted to Upland Elementary School to inaugurate a school library. We are all incredibly grateful to Turning Point Elementary School and The Cohen-Ahitov Family for initiating this project.

The Mariano Mercado Scholarship Students are a major part in carrying out Wild Orchid Community Projects

The Mariano Mercado Scholarship Students are a major part in carrying out Wild Orchid Community Projects. They worked very hard to nourish hungry children in the community. The team prepared healthy meals at Wild Orchid headquarters in Carcar, Cebu. After preparing and packing the hot meals, they went to the site for the meal. Inadequate nourishment is a common state for many in these rural neighborhoods. While most families make less than $5 per day, it is always a struggle to have a constant supply of balanced meals. Many people live off the land, planting their own crops and selling them too. Since electricity is not always available (or a safe installment) many families do not have refrigerators or running water near the home.

While hunger is a social malaise to all it affects; it is especially detrimental to young children, who become weak and emaciated. Apart from health issues, they are unable to focus and learn in school on an empty stomach. The Wild Orchid Scholarship Students know this hunger. This is their reality. This is why it is so important for them to finish their studies, graduate and build careers for self -sustainability. The Wild Orchid Foundation presents a vision to a community, to transform lives in their “barangays” (neighborhoods).

Our scholars are deeply grateful to be able to pursue their dreams and graduate. This is not a common achievement for much of the population, including their parents. This is why our scholars are invested to give back to those who are struggling, in their communities; and to break the cycle of poverty.  This would not be possible without the support of our benefactors. Daghan salamat sa tanan. (Thank you for everything) If you wish to help in our feeding and health programs you can donate using PayPal to thewildorchidfoundation@gmail.com

100% of your donations go directly to the cause and not to administrative expenses because the costs are covered by the Wild Orchid founders.

January News

The Wild Orchid Foundation visited Peru to expand and visit other humanitarian  projects.  In our expansion, we connect with other cultures and philanthropists with progressive plans. First, we visited Agro Vision Farms which is a collaborative project withWild Orchid Vice President, Alberto Jimenez Crespo; and Board
Member Ari Miller and other partners. In a growing project to develop farmland in Lambayeque; crops (blueberries, raspberries, grapes, avocados) are cultivated  for sustenance in a previously underdeveloped region. As a result the economy has risen in this community. By hiring women and providing them with salaries, the rate of wife battery has significantly decreased since women are now bringing in a significant income to the household.

The Wild Orchid Team also visited The Sol y Luna Foundation in Cusco. The Foundation helps Inca Children in The Sacred Valley by providing them with an education. Founder, Petite runs the school from the profits of her boutique hotel also called Sol y Luna. http://asociacionsolyluna.com/nosotroseng.html#historia

Wild Orchid hosted our 2nd Holiday Charity Party with Lipstick Sister

In December, Wild Orchid hosted our 2nd Holiday Charity Party with Lipstick Sister. Lipstick Sister is a women’s empowerment group in which women support each other in their endeavors, and together, work to be the positive change and impacting difference in the world.

At this event, we reviewed Wild Orchid’s projects in fruition, and the direct results of Lipstick Sister’s collaboration and support. In the 2017 Holiday Event, Lipstick Sister Erica Lippy, suggested that we inaugurate a library for Filipino students. Due of the generosity of Lipstick Sister, Turning Point School, Good Shepherd School, Cathedral Chapel School and other individual donors; we sent over 1,000 books to The Philippines in LBC Balikbayan Boxes.  Upland Elementary School now has a full library and 2 other schools are “growing their libraries.”

We also had a few speakers: Wild Orchid Vice President: Alberto; Wild Orchid Member and Chairperson, Guy Sharma and Lipstick Sister, Kelly Christopher Moran.  After our speakers, we were presented with a Filipino Cultural Presentation of music, dance and spoken word by performing company, A Stage of Our Own: director Toni Temehana Pasion, with Veronica Mercado and Leilani Banday.  The performers graced our evening and brought blessings to our space. We also enjoyed delicious  cuisine, provided by Castillillas C&T, a family owned business, managed by chefs: Isaias Castillas and Becky Garcia.

We are grateful to Lipstick Sister, for your ongoing donations and support. Thank you to the  Wild Orchid Team for all your input and stories. Daghan Salamat to A Stage of Our Own, for your artistry and expertise. And muchísimas gracias, Castillillas C&T for all your care, and service in making our events top notch. You have all made a difference in touching the lives of others, who are deeply grateful for your love.

In November, Wild Orchid was very blessed to have more Junior Ambassadors

In November, Wild Orchid was very blessed to have more Junior Ambassadors, eighth graders from Good Shepherd Catholic School help in the effort to break the cycle of poverty. We are so grateful to our youths for being the change we want in the world. We had eighth graders: Rocco, Colin and Etienne pack Balikbayan boxes to be shipped off to the Philippines. If you wish to donate to cover the shipping costs of the Balikbayan boxes, you can go to the donation portal. **** The cost is $80 per box.  The boys packed over 1000 books that were donated by Turning Point Elementary. Wild Orchid is so proud of our students for their drive and enthusiasm in making a difference. We also, went as a group, to feed homeless women at the Languille House Emergency Shelter for Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children. For this project, Kyle, Matthew, Mateus and Nico brought and prepared food for the homeless. Kyle also led a heartfelt prayer before meals. Wild Orchid does most of their work in The Philippines, but we are always ready to serve the underserved wherever we are, and whenever we can fill a need, we will do it. Seeing our youth so concerned with our community, shows us that the future is in good hands. After feeding the homeless, our eighth graders went back to Wild Orchid Headquarters to pack more Balikbayan boxes. Our work is never-ending but their efforts will undoubtedly make a lot of children happy to experience the joy of reading and learning.

Here we have our youngest Junior Ambassador, Marco

We had so many books from the drive that Junior Ambassador Chiara helped with our Operations Officer, Eva.

October News

SUCCESSFUL BOOK DRIVE

October was a month of service from different members of the Wild Orchid Team and community.  The Cohen-Ahitov family led a drive at their Culver City school: Turning Point School. Over 1400 books, were donated, by Turning Point students, and their families. The outpour of effort continued long after the drive officially ended. The kindergarten class also participated in a writing exchange with Filipino Students of their common age. The books will be donated to schools in the Philippines for the Nyora Taling Literacy Programs to inaugurate libraries for students. A portion of the books will also go to The Carcar Detention Center and The Carcar City Jail so detainees and inmates can also benefit from story and literacy.  Our gratitude surpasses what words can express. Daghan Salamat to the Cohen Family and Turning Point School. You are making a “turning point” difference in the lives of others here and now.

EIGHTH GRADE HELPS PACK BOOKS

The Eighth Grade Wild Orchid Junior Ambassadors from Good Shepherd Elementary School, Colin Yarbrough, Rocco Rossetto and Etienne Jimenez-Baran volunteered hours on their day off to categorize and organize the books donated by Turning Point School and pack them into Balik Bayan boxes to ship to the Philippines.  You have all our admiration for your selfless giving of your time and service to assist Wild Orchid communities.

The Wild Orchid Quarterly US Team Visit was a tremendous success

The Wild Orchid Quarterly US Team Visit was a tremendous success. We were very productive and planted new seeds in our program. We were able to formally introduce our charitable organization on Mariano Mercado Day, which is a day that the City of Carcar commemorates former mayor and humanitarian, Don Mariano Mercado. It is in joint celebration with the Catholic Celebration of the Birthday of The Virgen Mary, since Don Mariano Mercado was born on this day and named in her honor. Wild Orchid Founder, gave a speech to the citizens of Carcar and to City Officials to introduce The Wild Orchid Foundation. Founder Ate Coco was able to give various speeches throughout our stay to introduce our health, education and motivational agendas. Mariano Mercado Day was an opportunity in which Wild Orchid presented gifts from our donors to schools, birthing centers and correctional facilities.

We are excited with our new project of a feeding program to insure that identified students do not go to school hungry. Our communities are in rural areas and some, more remote than others. Many of our students come from broken families, who struggle daily to get by. Now with the recent tax inflation, many are spiraling into dire poverty. As they do not have a refrigerator, children often go to school hungry and live in a constant state of malnutrition. We are coordinating with educators to address this issue.

Our vocational students at Carcar City College are now able to print their thesis and do their work at the new Nyora Taling Student Learning Center, where they can use their lap top and printer free of charge. Prior, we had students who were not able to complete their thesis because the printing costs were too costly for them. The cost to print and bind a thesis is under 50 USD. We also have students who miss classes because they cannot afford bus fare to get to class every day. Bus fare in total can amount to $2-3 USD.

Our detention centers were full of detainees and many of them youths. Many of our detainees have less than an elementary school education. These youths are falling through the cracks for a lack of mentorship and lack of engagement. When one only has an elementary schooling, chances of employment are slim. Even is you find employment it is for less the $5 a day and is perhaps heavy labor such as delivering heavy cargo. The temptation of crime is often more favorable than an honest living; especially if it feeds your family. At the detention center, food is provided by the family, so we provided food for detainees who had no family visitations. We also had exercise: dance & yoga, chess and prayer. It is a joint prayer that transcends particular religions, as detainees may not be religious or are from diverse religious backgrounds. We respect that and come together in healing and love in our shared divine reflection. Our motivational and self affirmation is very necessary for our detainees to pursue on a positive note.

Wild Orchid visited our city jail. A facility of approximately 450 plus inmates, 35 of which are women. Everyone has their own story and many are far from family. The saddest part for Wild Orchid was to see some of our youth detainees there with their heads shaved and tears in their eyes. There is a permeating sadness amongst everyone, but Wild Orchid makes every effort to bring joy, hope and positivity to our inmates. We remind them of their significance, value as a living soul and human being. We constantly remind them of how sacred each and every life is. Sometimes they act as though they have never heard anything like this before. Thanks to our patrons, who are an eclectic array of benefactors of different nationalities; we gifted them with soap, toothpaste, chessboards and the women received cute cotton undies and sanitary napkins. We will commence with more program support by means of enrichment programs for art, education, self esteem and exercise. We believe that healing and rehabilitation starts with the person in the mirror, but it takes much external support to reassure each other that we truly belong to each other in a collective matrix to support and uplift.

With the infant mortality rate and high birth rate, Wild Orchid supporters donated refrigerators to birthing centers to store vaccines for newborn babies. Before these refrigerators, midwives would have to travel miles to another town to retrieve their vaccines for each birth. We are dedicated to intervening to break the cycle of poverty at the early and crucial stages of ones life. We also visited daycares and engaged with our toddlers with activities of art, music, dance, literacy and our young students were invited to The Mariano Mercado Ancestral Home for their first field trip.

Pamana Kali hosts Wild Orchid to join and holds raffle to assist Filipino underserved elementary schools

Pamana Kali hosts Wild Orchid to join and holds raffle to assist Filipino underserved elementary schools. The US Wild Orchid Team spent a fulfilled day at Pamana Kali’s Open House in celebration of Filipino Culture featuring Martial Arts, Music and Dance. Maraming salamat to all the donors and especially to Sensei Alvin Catacutan for welcoming and supporting Wild Orchid communities. The funds that were raised went to provide necessary supplies to elementary schools that are overpopulated. Some of these supplies are printers (there are a shortage of textbooks so teachers have to be resourceful and print their own materials), paper, pencils and notebooks for the academic year. The money raised also fed students who go to school without eating breakfast. The filipino students and their families are ever grateful to you, Sensei Alvin and your students and families. Thank you for your generosity. You are made an enduring difference allow our Filipino students to advance in both health and education. www.shieldkarate.com

Thank you Cathedral Chapel School Students and Staff

Cathedral Chapel School students have participated for 3 years now, in a letter writing cultural exchange with Filipino students in the Philippines of the same age category. This is to create “paper bridges” of new friendships, cultural and social awareness amongst students across the globe. During Wild Orchid visitations to unite students, we celebrate with such activities as song, dance and a pictorial presentation with video footage so we can get a slice of life to other people’s living. Thanking our 4th Grade Class and Kindergarten Class for their participation. A very special thank you to Kindergarten Teacher Ms. De Guzman for generously donating books and workbooks to our emergent readers in the Philippines.
